In 2011, the CAC opened its doors on Grant Street, about eight blocks from the Buffalo State campus. The community-based office was made possible through a large gift from alumna Eleanore Woods Beals, '50, and her husband, Vaughn Beals who shared a vision of supporting educational attainment for youth in Buffalo. A team comprised of Buffalo State community engagement and education leaders translated this vision into the Community Academic Center to further increase Buffalo State’s presence in its West Side neighborhood. Structurally, the CAC developed a three-pronged approach to program development. First, we offered direct programs in our Grant Street community classroom with collaborative programs meeting identified community need. Second, we coordinated support programs engaging Buffalo State faculty, service-learners, and volunteers at community partner locations. Third, we collaboratively developed broad-based networking programs with numerous community agencies to promote effect service provision.
