In partnership with Journey’s End Refugee Services and Buffalo Public School 45 the CAC developed Buffalo Beginnings as an educational program that supported newcomer refugee youth in their transition into Buffalo schools and life in the U.S. urban environment. Originally a bridge program offered students before enrolled in school. Buffalo Beginnings has recently transitioned into an after-school program to better meet the needs of newcomer youth.
Buffalo Beginnings offers English as a New Language (ENL) instruction that is integrated with academic and practical literacy content. Throughout the course of the program, students acquire basic English language skills as well as knowledge and practical skills that help them adjust to and succeed in their new environment. Additionally, Buffalo State volunteers and service-learners work with students to help with homework and to support the development of academic skills and content being delivered during the school day.
