In 2011, the CAC opened its doors on Grant Street, about eight blocks from the Buffalo State campus. The community-based Buffalo State office was made possible through a large gift from alumna Eleanore Woods Beals, '50, and her husband, Vaughn Beals who shared a vision of supporting educational attainment for youth in Buffalo. A team comprised of Buffalo State community engagement and education leaders translated this vision into the Community Academic Center to further increase Buffalo State’s presence in its West Side neighborhood.
The CAC serves as a unique location that provides educational opportunities to residents in one of the most diverse neighborhoods in New York State, while simultaneously providing Buffalo State students with an excellent education outside of the classroom. Since opening, we have served 12,711 community students and were supported by 3,441 Buffalo State service-learners and volunteers. This year the CAC celebrates its 7th anniversary and has continued to expand educational programming by providing 565 community students and 80 Buffalo State students with reciprocal learning opportunities. This October the CAC will introduce a pilot program called Launch, an afterschool highschool program that prioritizes educational success, career development, and financial readiness for English Language Learners.
